The article examines the history of the construction and functioning of the building of the first university library of Odesa as an integral component of the academic space and the urban cultural environment of the early twentieth century. It analyzes the architectural features of the book depository of the Scientific Library of Odesa I. I. Mechnikov National University and their correspondence to contemporary concepts of the library as a specialized scholarly institution. Particular attention is paid to the contribution of architects to the formation of the library’s
architectural image and to the combination of functional requirements with representative qualities. The evolution of the library is traced as a space for the preservation of knowledge and as a material bearer of Odesa’s cultural memory.
